- 2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
- 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1.5 to 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a heavy-duty stand mixer, beat together the cold butter, grated cheddar cheese, salt, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder until creamy.
- Gradually add the flour, mixing until the dough comes together without sticky patches.
- Spoon the mixture into a cookie press or piping bag with a star tip and pipe long ribbons onto the prepared baking sheets.
- Cut the ribbons into 4-inch pieces with a knife or pizza cutter.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on wire racks. Optionally, sprinkle with seasoned salt while warm.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 GF flour blend. Store cooled cheese straws in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
