Description

A quick and irresistible Southern snack that combines sharp cheddar and buttery flakiness, perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1.5 to 1.75 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a heavy-duty stand mixer, beat together the cold butter, grated cheddar cheese, salt, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder until creamy.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing until the dough comes together without sticky patches.
  4. Spoon the mixture into a cookie press or piping bag with a star tip and pipe long ribbons onto the prepared baking sheets.
  5. Cut the ribbons into 4-inch pieces with a knife or pizza cutter.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool on wire racks. Optionally, sprinkle with seasoned salt while warm.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 GF flour blend. Store cooled cheese straws in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
