Description

A cozy and indulgent dessert that transforms stale bread into a custardy treat infused with festive spices and topped with whipped cream or rum caramel.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups stale bread, cubed (challah, brioche, or dense sandwich bread)
  • 2 cups eggnog
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated preferred)
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, rum caramel, toasted nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cube the stale bread and place it in the greased baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggnog, eggs, sugar, and nutmeg until well combined.
  4. Pour the eggnog mixture over the cubed bread, ensuring all pieces are soaked thoroughly. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to absorb.
  5. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Dish out warm portions and top with whipped cream if desired.

Notes

For added richness, consider using an extra egg yolk in the custard mixture. Customize with optional add-ins like chocolate chips or dried fruit.
